THE MANY SUITS WE WEAR: ALIX TWIGGS WRIGHT

OPENING RECEPTION : JULY 28, 6-8 PM | ON VIEW : JULY 28 - SEPTEMBER 9

The Many Suits We Wear explores the multifaceted nature of human existence and the different roles we embody. Inspired by my own experiences as a mother and student, this work delves into the metaphorical suits we wear on a given day. I refer to these suits as magical clothing because they hold more than they show. I use found and thrifted objects because they hold so much memory and history. Through a pilgrimage of self-discovery, I have created these “magical suits”, using repurposed materials, particularly towels that hold personal significance as I once used towels for self-harm. My hands and experiences aren’t the only ones deeply embedded in these pieces.

Through the convergence of sculpture, found materials, objects, performance, and installation, this body of work unravels the significance of the titles we bestow upon ourselves and the weight they carry in our everyday lives.
“Many Suits” invites viewers to reflect on their own suits and the stories they tell, illuminating the universal quest for belonging, individuality, and fulfillment. We all have suits we put on, some long-term, some temporary, and maybe some you can’t wait to slip out of right when you get home. Engaging with these sculptures encourages viewers to imagine shedding these layers at the end of each day.
