Old Master Influences in Figure Drawing with Erin Meads

This course offers students the opportunity to observe and study the drawings of various Old Master artists and then apply observed techniques into their own work from the live model. Over the course of four weeks, students will participate in both slide presentations and time for drawing, consisting of both

short and long poses.

Students will study the drawings of such masters as Pontormo, Tiepolo, Rubens, Van Dyck, Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Watteau, Piazzetta, Rembrandt, and Delacroix, with the intent of learning and incorporating appealing techniques into their own work. Lectures, demonstrations, and individual critiques will be used to teach specific concepts. Like the old masters, instead of copying the pose, students will be challenged to see and represent the beauty inspired by each individual pose in their own unique way.

18” x 24” Newsprint paper

 *Nicer drawing paper for more sustained drawings

   o I like Canson Mi-Teintes in Cloud White, Ivory, Lily, Moonstone, Sky Gray, White

 Drawing board with clips

 Black (Pierre Noir) Conté, Charcoal, or other drawing medium

   o I like General’s Charcoal Pencils – 2B, 4B

   o I like Conté Crayons and Conté Pencils – 1B (Conté à Paris brand)

 Sanguine (Red/Orange) Conté, Nu-Pastel, or other drawing medium

   o I like Conté Crayons and Conté Pencils – (Conté à Paris brand)

 White Conté Crayon or white charcoal
